You just returned home from a three-day vacation. Your severely wilted plants tell you they were not watered before you left. Use the cohesion–tension theory of water transport to explain what happened to them.

Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason of plant wilting using cohesion theory of water transport.

Concept introduction:

The process of plant loss rigidity is termed as plant wilting. This process is associated with lowered level of water in cells because of a fall in the turgor pressure that maintains the water level in plants. The absorption rate of water by a plant should be always greater than the rate of loss through transpiration. The plant suffers wilting when this ratio gets disturbed or altered.

Explanation

Water is the most crucial factor for a plant for performing its normal cellular functions. The water is absorbed by the roots.  The movement of water from the roots to its leaves can be explained using cohesion tension theory of water transport. The water movement from the roots to the vascular tube (xylem) is facilitated by osmosis. From the xylem, the molecules reach the leaves by adhering to one another and are pulled upward using the force called tension or transpiration pull. This force is applied by the water molecule that escapes out of the stomata (transpiration)...
