Textbook Problem

Glass is a mixture of several compounds, but a major constituent of most glass is calcium silicate, CaSiO3. Glass can be etched by treatment with hydrofluoric acid; HF attacks the calcium silicate of the glass, producing gaseous and water-soluble products (which can be removed by washing the glass). For example, the volumetric glassware in chemistry laboratories is often graduated by using this process. Balance the following equation for the reaction of hydrofluoric acid with calcium silicate.

CaSiO 3 ( s )   + HF ( a q ) CaF 2 ( a q ) +  SiF 4 ( g )   +  H 2 O ( l )

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: A balanced form of the given chemical equation is to be stated.

Concept introduction: According to the law of conservation of mass, mass can neither be created nor destroyed. The mass of reactants is equal to the mass of products formed during a chemical process.

To determine: A balanced form of the given chemical equation.

Explanation

The stated reaction is,

CaSiO3(s)+HF(aq)CaF2(aq)+SiF4O(g)+H2O(l)

According to the law of conservation of mass, mass can neither be created nor destroyed. The mass of reactants is equal to the mass of products formed. Therefore a chemical equation, having lesser number of moles of an element on either side of a reaction, is balanced using appropriate numerical coefficients to satisfy the law of conservation of mass.

Adding the coefficient 6 to HF balances the number of atoms of fluorine present on either side of the reaction
