Interpretation:

The common examples derived from the groups of the periodic table are to be written.

Concept Introduction:

A group or family of elements, which is present in the periodic table, is divided by their chemical appearance. Some of these elements are placed in the same period but their chemical properties are different. Like Na belongs to period 1 and has a tendency to lose one electron but Mg belongs to period 2 and has a tendency to lose two electrons.

Explanation of Solution

a) Alkali metals

Alkali metals belong to group 1. Elements of alkali metals are very reactive and that is why they are stored in non-aqueous solutions such as kerosene. Alkali metals react with water and form strong bases. Alkali metals are electropositive, monovalent. This means they have only one electron in their outermost shell and it is easy to lose that valence electron, to form ionic compounds.

b) Alkaline earth metals

Alkaline earth metals belong to group 2. Elements in the alkaline earth metal group are slightly reactive at standard temperature and pressure. Alkaline earth metals are electropositive, divalent, that is, they have only two electrons in their outermost shell and easily lose them. These metals also react with water and form insoluble hydroxides.

c) Halogens

The halogens belong to group 17. Like alkali metals, halogens are the most reactive. Halogens are diatomic or consist of two atoms, have a tendency to form salts and have a low melting point and low boiling point.

d) Nobel gas

Nobel gases belong to group 18. Nobel gases have lower density than air and they can not react with anything because of their inertness.

e) Metals

Metals are solid, shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity
