An atomic ion is the ion made up of only one atom, with a positive or negative charge. When an atom loses one or more electrons, a positively charged ion is formed and it is known as a cation. When an atom gains one or more electrons, a negatively charged ion is formed and it is known as an anion. The capability of gaining or losing electrons is based on the electronic configuration of the atom.

Explanation of Solution

a) A rubidium atom that has lost one electron

The electronic configuration of rubidium is [Kr] 5s1, which shows that it has one electron in its outermost orbital and it has ability to lose one electron to attain a fully filled electronic configuration from s-orbital.

Hence, rubidium loses one electron to form a positively charged Rb+1 ion.

b) An iodine atom that has gained one electron

The electronic configuration of iodine is  [Kr] 4d10 5s2 5p5, which shows that it has five electrons in its outermost orbital and therefore to achieve stable electronic configuration it needs, one more electron
