Concept explainers
In a large metropolitan hospital, cells from newborn babies are collected and examined microscopically over a 5-year period. Among approximately 7500 newborn males, six have one Barr body in the nuclei of their somatic cells. All other newborn males have no Barr bodies. Among 7500 female infants, four have two Barr bodies in each nucleus, two have no Barr bodies, and the rest have one. What is the cause of the unusual number of Barr bodies in a small number of male and female infants?

- Why would a mutation in a somatic cell of a multicellular organism not necessarily result in a detectable phenotype?arrow_forwardThree autosomal recessive mutations in yeast, all producing the same phenotype (m1, m2, and m3), are subjected to complementation analysis. Of the results shown below, which, if any, are alleles of one another? Predict the results of the cross that is not shown—that is, m2 * m3. Cross 1: m1 * m24 F1: all wild-type progeny Cross 2: m1 * m34 F1: all mutant progenyarrow_forwardWhy is the difference in cohesin cleavage in mitosis and meiosis important for proper segregation in each respective cell division?arrow_forward
- What term is used to describe the dip at the region marked by 4? What is its purpose?arrow_forwardIn Figure 12-11b, in what chromosomal region are youlikely to find the most H1 histone protein?arrow_forwardIn Drosophila, males from a true-breeding stock with raspberry-colored eyes were mated to females from a true-breeding stock with sable-colored bodies. In the F1 generation, all the females had wild-type eye and body color, while all the males had wild-type eye color but sable-colored bodies. When F1 males and females were mated to each other, the F2 was composed of: 216 females with wild-type eyes and wild-type bodies 223 females with wild-type eyes and sable bodies 191 males with wild-type eyes and sable bodies 188 males with raspberry eyes and wild-type bodies 23 males with wild-type eyes and bodies 27 males with raspberry eyes and sable bodies Which statements are consistent with the above data? (Select all correct answers.) The alleles causing the raspberry-colored eye and sable-colored body phenotypes are dominant to the corresponding wild-type alleles The genes controlling raspberry-colored eyes and sable-colored bodies map…arrow_forward
- What functions do the two centromere-associatedcomplexes, cohesin and the kinetochore, play inchromosome mechanics?arrow_forwardThe dominant condition elliptocytosis causes red blood cells to become misshapen into oval-shaped cells. One of the genes responsible for the abnormal shape encodes the band 4.1 protein that together with ankyrin and other scaffold proteins creates and maintains the spherical concave shape of a normal red blood cell. The gene for band 4.1 protein, EPB41, is found on the p arm of chromosome 1. This is very close to the gene encoding the red blood cell Rhesus (Rh) blood type, either phenotype + (dominant) or - (recessive), with a recombination frequency of 2%. This means that 98% of the time alleles for these two genes are linked and are transmitted together. Diane and Jack are siblings, and both have elliptocytosis and Rh+ blood type. Due to the elliptocytosis, both had emergency splenectomies after having severe anemia. Their younger brother, Devonté, has not yet shown signs of elliptocytosis, but has Rh- blood. André, their dad, also has elliptocytosis and Rh+ blood; while their…arrow_forwardIn humans, dosage compensation is accomplished by: inactivating one X chromosome in female somatic cells inactivating one homolog from each homologous pair of chromosomes in female somatic cells inactivating the Y chromosome in male somatic cells increasing gene expression from the X chromosome in male somatic cellarrow_forward
- Let’s say there is an organism with two pairs of alleles, W/w and Z/z, each pair is located on a different pair of chromosomes in the organism’s somatic cells. During Prophase, what will you observe in the somatic cells?arrow_forwardIn Brinjal eggplants, purple fruit is incompletely dominant to white fruit, with the heterozygote being light violet. What is/are the genotype(s) of: the megaspore mother cell of a plant with purple flowers? the polar nucleus of a plant with light violet flowers? the megasporocyte of a plant with white flowers? the companion cell of a plant with light violet flowers?arrow_forwardIf A-P width is the most important regulator of digit number, which basic cellular mechanism would you expect to be correlated with digit number?arrow_forward
