The number of protons and electrons in each of the given ions is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

An atomic ion is the ion that consists of only one atom with a positive or negative charge. A positive ion is formed when an atom loses one or more electrons and is known as a cation. A negative ion is formed when an atom gains one or more electrons, and is known as an anion. The ability of gaining or losing of electrons is based on the electronic configuration of the atom.

Explanation of Solution

a) Mg2+

Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal in the periodic table The atomic number of magnesium is 12. So, it has 12 protons in the nucleus. The number of protons and the number of electrons are equal in magnesium atom.

The electronic configuration of magnesium atom is [Ne] 3s2, which shows that it has two electrons in its outermost orbital and it has the ability to lose two electrons. Hence, magnesium loses two electrons to form a positively charged Mg2+ ion which means that Mg2+ ion has two protons more than electrons.

Hence, Mg2+ ion is derived from the magnesium atom.

b) Se2

Selenium is a non-metal in the periodic table The atomic number of selenium is 34. So, it has 34 protons in the nucleus. The number of protons and the number of electrons are equal in selenium atom. The electronic configuration of selenium atom is [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p4, which shows that it has four electrons in its outermost orbital and it has the ability to gain two electrons in 4p-subshell.

Hence, selenium gains two electrons to form a negatively charged Se2 ion which means that Se2 ion has two protons less than electrons
