An atom consists ofa nucleus and extranuclear space. The nucleus of an atom is composed of protons and neutrons while the extranuclear space contains electrons.

The atoms of an element can exist in more than one form. Each form is termed as an isotope and differs from other forms by the number of neutrons while the number of protons and electrons are equal in all forms.

The isotopes of an element are the species that contain the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. So, they are variants of the same element. The mass number of an atom is represented by A and, because the atomic number is equal to the number of protons, it is represented by Z.

So, the number of neutrons is calculated as follows:

Number of neutrons=Mass number-Atomic numberN=A-Z

a) A carbon atom with 8 neutrons.

The calculation of the atomic number and mass number is as follows:

Number of protons in carbon = 6Atomic number = 6Number of neutrons = 8Mass number = Atomic number + number of neutrons                      = 6 + 8 = 14

Therefore, the atomic number of carbon is 6 and the mass number is 14.

b) An aluminum atom with 14 neutrons.

The calculation of the atomic number and the mass number is as follows:

Number of protons in aluminum = 13Atomic number = 13Number of neutrons = 14Mass number = Atomic number + number of neutrons                      = 13 + 14 = 27

Therefore, the atomic number of aluminum is 13 and the mass number is 27
