When the patient made a stronger muscular effort on the second FVC test, she only moved the equal pressure point of her airways

Expert Solution
Summary Introduction

To review:

The movement of the equal pressure point if the patient made a stronger muscular effort.

Introduction:

The equal pressure point is the point in the forced expiratory maneuver when the pressure in the airway decreases from the alveoli and the pressure within the lumen becomes equal to the pressure of the surrounding. The equal pressure point is one of the physiologic effects that affects the spirometry.

Please refer to Clinical Application Case-1 for further information.

Explanation of Solution

In the given case, it is shown that the pulmonary mechanism of the patient can act as a clinical monitor during a forced expiratory maneuver. The personal best PEFR, which is determined by the patient at home, helps to evaluate the severity of the asthma attack. The same bedside spirometry results were obtained by the respiratory therapist. On making strong muscular efforts, the dynamic compression and equal pressure points moved and it increased the airway resistance.

The airways are compressed when the patient moves the equal pressure point toward the mouth...
