To determine

The angle θ and the height of the building.

Answer to Problem 1P

The height of the building is 66.14 m and the angle θ

  is 41.4°.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The given figure representing the building top and range finder is shown below.

Calculation:

Consider the below figure.

Introductory Mathematics for Engineering Applications, Chapter 3, Problem 1P , additional homework tip 2

First calculate an angle θ ,

From the right angle triangle

cosθ=Adjecent sideHypotenuse

cosθ=75100θ=cos1( 75 100)=41.4°

Therefore the angle θ

  is 41.4°.

For the height of the building,

sinθ=opposite sideHypotenuse

sin(41.4°)=h100

0.6614=h100

h=0.6614×100=66.14m

Conclusion:

Thus, the height of the building is 66.14 m and the angle θ

  is 41.4°.
