Concept explainers
The growth of a microbial cell requires nutrients which are derived from the environment and transform them into precursor molecules. Based on the
Explanation of Solution
A cell is composed of elements such as elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur. Nutrient that is needed by the cell in larger quantities are called macronutrients. The carbon and nitrogen are considered as macromolecules of the cell and are required in higher amounts.
The cell that acquire nutrients in trace or little amounts, such as trace elements or growth factors are called micronutrients. Cobalt is act as a cofactor for some enzymes and is required in trace amounts.
Thus, carbon and nitrogen are macronutrient required in larger amounts, whereas cobalt is a micronutrient required in trace amounts.
