Textbook Problem

Why is the pattern (to the right) called a temperature inversion?

images

To determine

The reason why the pattern to the right of the accompanying figure is called a temperature inversion.

Explanation

It is known that the temperature decreases on moving up from the Earth’s surface to the troposphere. The drop in temperature after every 1000 meters is referred as the normal lapse rate and is nearly 6.5C. This means as one goes up from the Earth’s surface to the troposphere, there will be a fall in temperature by 6.5C at each 1000 meters.

Temperature inversion is a condition that is the inverse of these normal conditions where warmer air is found near the surface
