Chapter 3, Problem 24P
A rock is thrown upward from the level ground in such a way that the maximum height of its flight is equal to its horizontal range R. (a) At what angle θ is the rock thrown? (b) In terms of the original range R, what is the range Rmax the rock can attain if it is launched at the same speed but at the optimal angle for maximum range? (c) Would your answer to part (a) be different if the rock is thrown with the same speed on a different planet? Explain.

A football is punted from the ground, it passes through the apex of its flight, and it begins its downward decent. When its height above the field is h = 2.5m, the horizontal and vertical components of its velocity are observed to have the values v(horizontal) = 15 m/s and v(vertical) = 2.5 m/s, respectively. Use a Cartesian coordinate system with the origin located ar the inital position of the football. Ignore air resistance. Calculare the time, in seconds, from when the football left the ground until it is descending at a height of h = 2.5m.
A projectile is fired with an initial speed of 40 m/s at angle of 23 degrees above the horizontal on a long flat firing range. Determine (1) the maximum vertical distance reached by the projectile, (2) the total time in the air, (3) the range of the projectile, (4) the velocity of the projectile 2 s after firing.
A rugby player passes the ball 9.75 m across the field, where it is caught at the same height as it left his hand. At what angle was the ball thrown if its initial speed was 12.0 m/s, assuming that the smaller of the two possible angles was used?
(Answer in Degrees)
What other angle gives the same range?
(Answer in Degrees)
For the pass using the smaller of the two angles, how long is the ball in the air?

The maximum horizontal range is given by xmax=(v 2/0 sin2θ)/g, where g is the acceleration due to gravity. Here is the problem: If a soccer ball is kicked from ground level with an initial velocity of 28 m/sec, what is the smallest positive angle at which the player should kick the ball to reach a teammate 48m down the field? - A golf ball struck on earth rises to a maximum height of 60 m and hits the ground 230 m away. How high will the same golf ball travel on the moon if the magnitude and direction of its velocity are the same as they were on earth immediately after the ball was hit? Assume that the ball is hit and lands at the same elevation in both cases and that the effect of the atmosphere on the earth is neglected, so that the trajectory in both cases is a parabola. The acceleration of gravity on the moon is 0.165 times that on earth.arrow_forwardFrom the edge of a high cliff overlooking a flat valley, you shoot a cannonball horizontally over the valley with an initial speed of 120 m/s. - For a fixed initial speed, the range of a projectile is determined by the angle at which it is fired. For all but the maximum, there are two angles that give the same range. Considering factors that might affect the ability of an archer to hit a target, such as wind, explain why the smaller angle (closer to the horizontal) is preferable. When would it be necessary for the archer to use thelarger angle?
