Textbook Problem

# In a construction project, the field moist unit weight was 17.5 kN/m3 and the moisture content was 11%. If maximum and minimum dry unit weights determined in the laboratory were 19.2 kN/m3 and 14.1 kN/m3, respectively, what was the field relative density?

To determine

Calculate the field relative density.

Explanation

Given information:

The maximum dry unit weight (γd(max)) is 19.2kN/m3.

The minimum dry unit weight (γd(min)) is 14.1kN/m3.

The moist unit weight (γ) is 17.5kN/m3.

The moisture content (w) is 11%.

Calculation:

Calculate the dry unit weight (γd) using the relation.

γd=γ1+w

Substitute 11% for w and 17.5kN/m3 for γ.

γd=17.51+11100=17.51.11=15.76kN/m3

Calculate the relative density (Dr) using the relation
