Explanation

The part of the Earth facing the sun changes with time as it rotates and revolves. The Earth attains an orbital position on around June 21, such that it has its north polar axis inclined toward the sun at 2312. During noon, on this day, the sunlight falls directly over 2312 N, and therefore the day will be termed as summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

From Figure 3.5, it is evident that both the hemispheres receive unequal amount of solar energy on this day, as the rotation of the Earth on this particular day is in such a way that a greater part of the Northern Hemisphere is exposed to daylight
