Textbook Problem

If you have “silverware” in your home, you know it tarnishes easily. Tarnish is from the oxidation of silver in the presence of sulfur-containing compounds (in the atmosphere or in your food) to give black Ag2S. To remove the tarnish, you can warm the tarnished object with some aluminum foil in water with a small amount of baking soda. Silver sulfide reacts with aluminum to produce silver as well as aluminum oxide and hydrogen sulfide.

3 Ag2S(s) + 2 Al(s) + 3 H2O(ℓ) → 6 Ag(s) + Al2O3(s) + 3 H2S(aq)

Hydrogen sulfide is foul smelling, but it is removed by reaction with the baking soda. NaHCO3(aq) + H2S(aq) → NaHS(aq) + H2O() + CO2(g) Classify the two reactions, and identify any acids, bases, oxidizing agents, or reducing agents.

Removing slyer tarnish. (a) A badly tarnished piece of silver is placed In a dish with aluminum foil and aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate. (b) The portion of the silver in contact with the solution is now free of tarnish.

Interpretation Introduction

In a given two reactions, acid and bases, oxidizing and reducing agent should be identified.

Concept introduction:

Oxidation - reduction reaction: The electrons are transferred to one to other is called oxidation reduction reaction.

Most of the ionic compounds are soluble in water, very few of the ionic compounds are sparingly soluble, and some of the ionic compounds are insoluble in water.  When it is soluble in water ions gets separated in the solution.

The given reaction is oxidation-reduction reaction and gas-forming reaction which is shown below

Oxidation-reduction reaction:

  3Ag2S(s) +2Al(l) + 3H2O(l)6Ag(s) + Al2O3(s) + 3H2S(aq)

The oxidation state of silver is +1 in the reactant, the oxidation state of aluminum is zero in the reactant whereas the oxidation state of silver is zero in the product and the oxidation state of aluminum is +3 therefore the given reaction is oxidation reduction reaction.

Ag2S is oxidizing agent and Al is reducing agent
