Textbook Problem

Define the quantum numbers n , l , m l , s , and m s .

To determine

To define:

All the quantum numbers for an electron of an atom.

Explanation
  1. Principal Quantum Number (n):Principal quantum number defines the shell or the energy level in which the electron is present. This quantum determines the available values for other quantum numbers. Shells are the rings present around the nucleus of the atom where electron revolves. These rings which are called shells are determined from Principal Quantum Number.
  2. Azimuthal (Angular Momentum) Quantum Number (l):The Azimuthal or Angular Momentum quantum number defines the shape of the orbital in which the electron is revolving. The value to l depends only on the value of principal quantum number, n. Value for angular quantum number is from l= 0,1,2 to (n-1).
  3. For eg: If n = 2, l = 0,1 since n-1 = 2-1 =1.
  4. Magnetic Quantum Number (ml):Magnetic quantum number defines the orientation of the orbital. The different values of magnetic quantum number are called degeneracy, which means the number of orbital in the atom which is present at the same energy level...
