Explanation of Solution

A fixed pattern of behaviour is a series of actions caused by a cue, known as key stimulus. Although a fixed pattern of action is more complex than a reflex, it is still automatic and involuntary. Once stimulated, it will continue the process of completion even if the key stimulus is removed.

Fixed action patterns are invariant and are generated by a neural network known as an innate release mechanism in response to an external sensory stimulus identified as a sign trigger or releaser (a signal from one person to another).

A well- studied example of a fixed action patterns occurs in Ground-resting water birds like Greyleg geese. If the egg of a female grayleg goose rolls out of her nest, she instinctively uses her bill to push the egg back into the nest in a series of highly stereotypical, predictable movements. The image of an egg in the mind of the goose, which is outside the nest is a stimulus that triggers the recovery behaviour.

A fixed action pattern is not learned but it is hereditary in nature.

Conclusion

Sign triggers are often encountered while following a fixed action pattern (FAP) that is an intrinsic trait with very little variation in the way the actions are performed.
