Concept introduction: The undifferentiated mass of cells that can differentiate into specific cell types is called as stem cells. There are mainly two types of stem cells – Embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.

These stem cells are found in multicellular organisms and can be cultured in laboratory. Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into nearly all types of cells found in an organism, whereas adult stem cells can only differentiate into specific cell types. ESCs are pluripotent in nature that is they can differentiate into any cell type such as into muscle cells, nerve cells, blood cells, fat cells, and so on.


The pluripotent stem cells have the ability to generate any cell types derived from the three germ layers. The two types of pluripotent stem cells are embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs).

Both of them share certain common features such as colony morphology, gene expression, and alkaline phosphatase activity. These cells can differ by the length of telomeres that is IPSCs have shorter telomeres than the ESCs...
