Concept explainers
Quality of water is a very important factor which helps to ensure public health. Contaminated water is the source of various types of waterborne diseases. Various types of waterborne illness occur due to untreated or poorly treated water which is used for drinking or food preparation purposes.
Explanation of Solution
The two major classes of water include potable water and recreational water. Water which is suitable for the consumption of human beings is referred to as potable water. Filtration and chlorination process are the two important processes which are carried out in potable water to make it safe for consumption. Recreational water includes aquatic freshwater systems such as a stream, lakes, ponds, as well as public wading and swimming pools. This recreational source of water acts as a major cause of waterborne illness and causes more disease outbreaks as compared to drinking water.
Surface water can be made safe for drinking purposes through the process of filtration and chlorination. Both these process make the surface of recreational water just like of potable water.
