Chapter 31.SE, Problem 34AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To propose the structure of the final polymerized product of the urea and formaldehyde.

Concept introduction:

Urea-formaldehyde polymer is also known as urea-methanal. It is non transparent, thermosetting resin or polymer. Its monomer units are urea and formaldehyde. Urea-formaldehyde polymer is generally used as an adhesive, wooden carving, electrical components and making paints etc.

Properties like high heat resistant, less water absorption, mould shrinking makes it a better adhesive in nature.

This types of reaction occurs according to the condensation polymerization mechanism. Condensation polymerization mechanism involves the removal of small molecules to give rise to final polymerized product.

One common type of cation exchange resin is prepared by polymerization of a mixture containing styrene and 1,4-divinylbenzene  . The polymer is then treated with concentrated sulfuric acid to sulfonate a majority of the aromatic rings in the polymer. Q.) Show the product of sulfonation of each benzene ring.
Polystyrene is produced commercially by reaction of styrene with butyllithium as an anionic initiator. Using resonance structures, explain how the chain-carrying intermediate is stabilized
Bakelite, a durable plastic used for the casing of early radios and TVs, was the first of the thermosetting polymers. It is a highly cross-linked polymer formed from the acid-catalyzed polymerization of phenol and formaldehyde. Because it is much darker than Melmac, Bakelite’s range of colors is limited. Propose a structure for Bakelite.
