Action potentials occur when ________

  1. a. a neuron receives adequate stimulation
  2. b. more and more sodium gates open
  3. c. sodium-potassium pumps kick into action
  4. d. both a and b

Summary Introduction

Introduction: Neurons are the brain cells that are specialized to transmit nerve impulses. There are three types of neurons, sensory neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons. In vertebrates, these neurons play important role in the flow of information. The voltage across a cell’s membrane is called membrane potential. The membrane potential of the neuron that is not being stimulated is known as resting potential. The cytoplasm contains negatively charged proteins and amino acids that are lacking in the interstitial fluid. The protein remains trapped in the plasma membrane as it cannot cross the neurons plasma membrane. The sodium ions (Na+) and potassium ions (K+) ions move in and out with the help of transport proteins.

Explanation of Solution

Reasons for the correct statement:

For an action potential to occur, the cytoplasm in the neurons trigger zone must reach threshold potential (adequate stimulation). At the threshold potential, the voltage-gated sodium channels will open.

Option a. is given as “a neuron receives adequate stimulation”.

Option b. is given as “more and more sodium gates open”.

Option d. is given as “both a and b”. Hence, option d. is correct.

Reasons for the incorrect statement:

Option a. is given as “a neuron receives adequate stimulation”. For an action potential to occur, the cytoplasm in the neurons trigger zone must reach an adequate stimulation...
