What is meant by a pivot? What does pivoting do?

To determine

The definition of a pivot and the use of pivoting.

Pivot is an entry in the matrix that is selected to ‘clear a column’. For the row reduction method always the first non-zero element of the row is selected as pivot. A pivot element is represented by putting a box around the element.

For example consider the matrix,

Select the first nonzero element of the first row as pivot.

Pivoting is the procedure of clearing the column using the selected pivot entry
