Optics The equation
sometimes called a lens-maker’s equation, gives the relationship between the focal length f of a thin lens, the distance p of the object from the lens, and the distance q of its image from the lens. We can think of the eye as an optical system in which the ciliary muscle constantly adjusts the curvature of the cornea-lens system to focus the image on the retina. Assume that the distance from the cornea to the retina is 2.5 cm, as shown in the figure below.
- a. Find the focal length of the cornea-lens system if an object located 50 cm away is to be focused on the retina.
- b. What is the rate of change of the focal length with respect to the distance of the object when the object is 50 cm away?

- Navigation The LORAN LOng RAnge Navigation system in the illustration uses two radio transmitters 26 miles apart to send simultaneous signals. The navigator on a ship at P(x,y) receives the closer signal rst and determines that the difference of the distances between the ship and each transmitter is 24 miles. That places the ship on a certain curve. Identify the curve and nd an equation in standard form.arrow_forwardHeight A tree grows at an angle of 4 from the vertical due to prevailing winds. At a point 40 meters from the base of the tree, the angle of elevation to the top of the tree is 30 (see figure). (a) Write an equation that you can use to find the height h of the tree. (b) Find the height of the tree.arrow_forwardFill in the blanks. An equation of the form ax+b=0 is called a ______ equation.arrow_forward
- VelocityThe speed of an airplane is 300 mi/h relative to the air. The wind is blowing due north with a speed of 30 mi/h. In what direction should the airplane head in order to arrive at a point due west of its location?arrow_forwardSound Location Listening station A and listening station B are located at 3300,0 and 3300,0, respectively. Station A detects an explosion 4 seconds before station B. (Assume the coordinate system is measured in feet and sound travels at 1100 feet per second.) (a) Where did the explosion occur? (b) Station C is located at 3300,1100 and detects the explosion 1 second after station A. Find the coordinates of the explosion.arrow_forwardAirplane Ascent During takeoff, an airplane’s angle of ascent is 18 and its speed is 260 feet per second. - The filament of a light bulb is a thin wire that glows when electricity passes through it. The filament of a car headlight is at the focus of a parabolic reflector, which sends light out in a straight beam. Given that the filament is 1.5 inches from the vertex, find an equation for the cross section of the reflector. The reflector is 7 inches wide. How deep is it?
