Explain why the motor cannot be started in high speed as shown in Figure 32-7.

Explanation of Solution

Refer to Figure 32-7 in the textbook. The connection shows that the motor should be started at low speed. This controller cannot be switched to the fast speed till the motor begins to run.

In the circuit, if the slow speed push button is pushed, the FR control relay and the slow speed starter S get energized. When the motor begins to run by pressing the fast speed button, the motor will cause to drop out the slow-speed starter. The high-speed starter is picked up through the FR control relay (normally open contacts) and through the interlock contacts S (normally closed) of slow-speed starter
