Answer to Problem 33.1Q

The major parts of the foundation system constitute footing, stem wall and pier.

Explanation of Solution

The foundation provides a base for the distribution of the structure's weight into the soil. The foundation shall also be designed to withstand any debris that floodwaters may carry.

The major parts of the foundation system are as follows:

  • Footing: It is the base of the system of foundation which is used to dislocate the loads of building over the soil. Footings are made of poured concrete and they are placed so as to extend below the level of freezing
  • Stem wall: The stem wall is the vertical wall extending from the top of the footing to the structure's first-floor level.
  • Pier: Piers support interior loads. The location of piers is determined by the type of floor system. In general, the pier depth of concrete piers is needed to match that of the footings.
