To determine

Explain why surface treatments may be necessary for various parts made by one or more processes.

Explanation of Solution

Surface treatments may be necessary for various parts so as to:

  1. 1. It can make the material more resistant to wear, erosion and indentation. This is important in case of machine-tool slide ways shafts, rolls, cams, and gears.
  2. 2. On surfaces that slide over each other like in tools, dies, bearings, and machine ways, reducing friction is important.
  3. 3. In applications like for electrical contacts, it can reduce adhesion.
  4. 4. It can improve corrosion and oxidation resistance of sheet metals that are used in bodies of automobiles, components in a gas turbine, food packaging, and medical devices.
  5. 5. It can make the fatigue resistance better for the components like bearings and shafts.
  6. 6. Modification of texture of the surface, its appearance, accuracy in dimensions and frictional characteristics is possible.
  7. 7. Other than these, it can also create decorative features like colour and textures for purely aesthetic purposes.
