Continued strenuous activity can cause lactate to accumulate in muscles. After the activity stops, the lactate is converted into pyruvate and used as an energy source. Explain how pyruvate can be used to produce ATP.

Summary Introduction

To explain: How the pyruvate can be used to produce ATP.

Concept introduction:

Cellular respiration is a biological process during which the chemical energy of food is released and gets converted in the form of ATP.  Cellular respiration can utilize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins as fuels. It occurs in four major steps: glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a high-energy molecule which helps to store the energy.

Explanation

During strenuous activity, the body utilizes oxygen for obtaining energy by breaking down glucose. However when this activity is continuous, there will be an increased accumulation of lactate in the muscles. This is because there will not be sufficient oxygen to complete the whole process. When this activity stops, the lactate will be converted to pyruvate in the absence of oxygen.

Cellular respiration generates energy that is utilized for various cellular activities. Glycolysis is the first step of cellular respiration, which occurs in the cytoplasm of a cell...
