Chapter 35.1, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction

To explain: The role of central vacuole and cell wall in plant growth.

Concept introduction:

Central vacuole is a large organelle found inside the plant cell. It occupies most of the space inside the cell. It contains water and various organic materials such as proteins, enzymes, inorganic ions and so on. It also helps in maintaining turgor pressure inside the plant cell.

The cell wall is a rigid structural layer that encloses the cell membrane. Cell wall is semi-permeable, that is, it allows only some substances to pass through it, while preventing the entry of other substances. It provides strength and protection to plants. The chief constituent of the cell wall is cellulose. Cellulose is a polymer of glucose. Beside cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin is also present in the cell wall.
