The role of humans as the intermediate host or definitive host for Trichinella.
Introduction:
Trichinella is the genus of parasitic roundworms of nematode that cause Trichinosis or Trichinellosis. The members of this genus are called trichinia worms. It is a food-borne disease and humans get affected by eating raw or undercooked meat from the animals infected by this
Explanation of Solution
The humans serve both as an intermediate host (larvae in the muscle) and a definitive host (adult worm in the intestine) for Trichinella. Both larval and adult forms can parasitize the humans as definitive hosts but later on, they become intermediate, when the larvae get established in between the muscles.
After the first week, they start to release the larvae that penetrate the intestinal wall and move to the muscle tissues where they encyst. The same host sustains the adult worm temporarily but larvae for a longer period of time.
Thus, the humans serve both the intermediate as well as the definitive host for the genus Trichinella.
