Textbook Problem

Discuss Concepts In some plant species, an endodermis is present in both stems and roots. In experiments, the shoots of mutant plants lacking differentiated endodermis in their root and shoot tissue do not respond normally to gravity, but roots of such plants do respond normally. Explain this finding, based on your reading in this chapter.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The reason for shoots of mutant plants lacking differentiated endodermis to respond to gravity normally.

Introduction:

The response of a plant toward the gravitational pull is called geotropism or gravitropism. Roots of plants respond positively toward the stimulus of gravitational pull. This means that the cells of the roots move toward the direction of gravity. The shoots of the plant, on the other hand, respond negatively to this stimulus. This means that the cells move in the opposite direction of gravity.

Explanation

The movement of a plant toward or against the gravitational pull involves the statoliths molecules present in the cells. These statoliths, in most plants, are amyloplasts. These amyloplasts are modified plastids that contain starch and are present in endodermal cells. In stems of plants, these amyloplasts sink, which provide stimuli for triggering IAA (indol acetic acid) redistribution.

It is considered that endodermal cells of the shoot are involved in sensing gravity...
