Textbook Problem

Name two types of friction facings.

To determine

The types of friction facing.

Friction facing can be divided into two parts. They are:

  1. Molded friction facing.
  2. Woven friction facing.

Molded friction facing has the property to withstand high loading force. Woven friction is used to provide extra cushioning in engaging clutch plate. These frictions faces are made up of asbestos. According to current scenario, asbestos is not easily degraded causing harm to environment. After seeing the harmful effect of asbestos on environment, manufacturers of clutches have started making molded friction plates using paper-base and ceramics.

Molded friction facing gets preference over woven friction facing because they can withstand higher pressure. Facing is attached with cushion spring. Facing surfaces have some grooves and cut on their surface to provide better engagement and disengagement of plates. For providing extra strength particles of cotton, brass and wires are used in form of thin wires.
