A python can survive by eating a large meal once or twice a year. When it does eat, microvilli in its small intestine lengthen fourfold and its stomach pH drops from 7 to 1. Explain the benefits or these changes.

Summary Introduction

To determine: The beneficial changes that occur in the digestive system of python after ingesting a large meal.

Concept introduction: Pythons are one of the largest snakes found in the world. Usually, the pythons consume the prey double times weight of their body mass. They kill their prey by constriction. Pythons follow an intensive digestive processes that makes several physiological changes and structural changes in size of their organ for digesting the large meal.

Explanation

Enormous changes occur in the python’s body while digesting such a large meal. The python ingests its prey and pH of the stomach suddenly drops due to the production of large amount of hydrochloric acids. The pH drops from alkaline condition (7.5) to extremely acidic condition (1-1.5) that activates several digestive enzymes. Pepsins are the important enzymes that are involved for initiating the digestion of the proteins. The acidity of the stomach kills all the microbes that may be present in the dead animal...
