 The formula mass of a compound is defined as the sum of the relative atomic masses of all the atoms present in the formula of the compound.

 It represents the overall mass of all the atoms present in the compound.

 For polyatomic ions, the number of atoms inside the brackets are multiplied by the subscript attached to the brackets.

 Molar mass is the mass of 1 mole of substance.

Explanation of Solution

The formula mass of a compound is the addition of atomic weights of all the atoms in the given formula, while molar mass is the mass in grams of one mole of the substance.

For example:

The formula mass of carbon dioxide (CO2) is calculated below.

Formula mass of CO2=(12.0+2×16
