Textbook Problem

Chlorine has two prominent isotopes, 37 Cl and 35 Cl . Which is more abundant? How do you know?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Most abundant isotope between 35 Cl and 37 Cl should be found and discussed

Concept Introduction:

Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. The number of protons in the nucleus is called Atomic number (Z), the sum of the number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus is called Mass number (A). So symbol for isotopes is, A Z X where X is the symbol of the element. Different isotopes have different relative abundances. And relative abundance of each isotope can be calculated using the average atomic mass of the element.

Average Atomic Mass=i=1n(Relative abundance × Atomic mass)i.

Explanation

Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. The number of protons in the nucleus is called Atomic number (z), the sum of the number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus is called Mass number (A). So symbol for isotopes is, A Z X where X is the symbol of the element. Different isotopes have different relative abundances. And relative abundance of each isotope can be calculated using the average atomic mass of the element.

Average Atomic Mass=i=1n(Relative abundance × Atomic mass)i

According to the periodic table, average atomic mass of Chlorine is 35.45 U.

Atomic mass of 35Cl = 35 U.

Atomic mass of 37Cl = 37 U
