Why must chemical equations be balanced?

Interpretation:

The fact that a chemical equation must be balanced is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

 Chemical reactions are represented by chemical equations, where the starting materials acting as reactants are written on the left side, and the final products are written on the right side of the equation.

 For any chemical reaction to be balanced, the number of atoms of each element on both sides should be equal.

 Coefficients are added to both reactants and products in order to make the number of atoms of each element on both sides equal, thereby making the equation balanced.

Explanation of Solution

In a chemical equation, the number of each type of atoms must be the same on either side of the arrow. The law of mass conservation states that in any chemical reaction or change, the mass of the system or in the reaction should be constant or conserved.

For example, consider the following chemical equation which is balanced.
