Each of the following compounds is to be classified as ionic or molecular compound.

Concept introduction:

Molecular compounds contain only nonmetals that are covalently bonded to each other. Any compound that has atleast two different elements are considered to be a molecule.

The ionic compounds contain atoms of metals and nonmetals that are bonded together by an ionic bond formed via the transfer of electrons between the atoms.

Explanation of Solution

a) KCl

KCl is an ionic compound that consists of metal and nonmetal elements bonded together via an ionic bond, which is formed as a result of the electron transfer between the ions. Here, the metal acts as the cation (K+) and the nonmetal acts as the anion (Cl).

An ionic bond is comparatively much stronger than a covalent bond.

b) CO2

CO2 is a molecular compound that consists of two nonmetals bonded together by covalent bonds which are formed by the sharing of valence electrons of the outermost shell of atoms.

A covalent bond is relatively weaker than an ionic bond
