Seatbelt provide the force necessary to slow down the motion of the passengers and thus, avoiding the collision of the passengers with the windshield in case of collision.

Explanation of Solution

Newton’s first law states that the object will continue its state of rest or of uniform motion unless or until an external force acts on it. When the automobile is in an accident, the automobile suddenly comes to rest or suddenly change the direction of its motion. But, according to Newton’s first law, the passengers will continue their motion because of inertia.

The inertia will lead the passengers in the path to collision with the wind shield. The seatbelt will provide the necessary force required to stop or change the motion of the passengers and thus, save them from collision with the windshield. Thus, seatbelts are necessary to ensure the safety of the passengers in an accident.
