Chapter 4, Problem 1P
To determine

The advantages and disadvantages of machine vision when compared with other forms of detection.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Machine vision helps in detecting traffic in many locations within the camera's field of view. The locations to be checked are selected by the user through interactive graphics. A detection signal is generated every time a vehicle passes over the detector lines, showing the presence of the vehicle.

The autoscope(wireless detector) with one or more cameras helps in replacing many loops by giving a wide zone detection system.

The device is easily installed without disturbing traffic operations, as compared to loop installation, and the detection configuration is varied either manually or by using a software containing a function of the traffic conditions.

The device is also proficient in obtaining traffic parameters, such as volume and queue lengths.

The disadvantage lies in the positioning of cameras, otherwise, it will lead to missed detections of vehicles since the truck would obstruct them from the camera's field of view.

Machine vision is not suitable in fog-prone areas as fog create complications with video detection.

Conclusion:

Machine vision is also known as Video image processing or Video detection system.
