Chapter 4, Problem 1RQ
Summary Introduction

Molecular biology is a branch of biology that deals with the study of the structure, function, and constituents of the biological molecules that are essential to life. These biological molecules include nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins. The activities between these molecules under various systems of the cells are studied in molecular biology. This includes DNA, RNA and protein interactions and their biosynthesis as well as their regulation of these interactions.

Explanation of Solution

The flow of genetic information in the cell forms the central dogma of molecular biology. It states that the DNA is transcribed into mRNA and the mRNA is translated into protein. This conversion is carried out by the process of replication, transcription, and translation respectively. The genetic information present in the DNA specifies the mRNA sequences which in turn specifies the protein sequences.

The processes involved in the flow of genetic information are as follows:

Replication: This is a process where the DNA is duplicated to form the daughter DNA molecules.

Transcription: It is a process in which the genetic information from the DNA is transcribed into RNA.

Translation: In this process, the proteins are synthesized by using the information that was carried by the messenger RNA.
