Concept explainers
A farm truck moves due east with a constant velocity of 9.50 m/s on a limitless, horizontal stretch of road. A boy riding on the back of the truck throws a can of soda upward (Fig. P4.33) and catches the projectile at the same location on the truck bed, hut 16.0 m farther down the road. (a) In the frame of reference of the truck, at what angle to the vertical does the boy throw the can? (b) What is the initial speed of the can relative to the truck? (c) What is the shape of the can’s trajectory as seen by the boy? An observer on the ground watches the boy throw the can and catch it. In this observer’s frame of reference, (d) describe the shape of the can’s path and (e) determine the initial velocity of the can.

- A firefighter, a distance d from a burning building, directs a stream of water from a fire hose at angle i above the horizontal as shown in Figure P3.16. If the initial speed of the stream is vi, at what height h does the water strike the building? Figure P3.16arrow_forwardIf a projectile is fired from the origin of the coordinate system with an initial velocity υ0 and in a direction making an angle α with the horizontal, calculate the time required for the projectile to cross a line passing through the origin and making an angle β < α with the horizontal.arrow_forwardOlympus Mons on Mars is the largest volcano in the solar system, at a height of 25 km and with a radius of 312 km. If you are standing on the summit, with what Initial velocity would you have to fire a projectile from a cannon horizontally to clear the volcano and land on the surface of Mars? - A fireman d = 50.0 m away from a burning building directs a stream of water from a ground-level fire hose at an angle of i = 30.0 above the horizontal as shown in Figure P3.18. If the speed of the stream as it leaves the hose is vi = 40.0 m/s, at what height will the stream of water strike the building? Figure P3.18arrow_forwardShow that the trajectory of a projectile thrown upward at an angle θ with the horizontal and with an initial speed v0 is parabolic.arrow_forwardA stone is thrown horizontally from the highest point of a 95 m building and lands 115 m from the base of the building. Ignore air resistance, and use a coordinate system whose origin is at the highest point of the building, with positive y upwards and positive x in the direction of the throw. How long is the stone in the air in seconds? What must have been the initial horizontal component of the velocity, in meters per second? What is the vertical component of the velocity just before the stone hits the ground, in meters per second? What is the magnitude of the velocity of the stone just before it hits the ground, in meters per second?arrow_forward
- A projectile is shot from the edge of a cliff 125 m above ground level with an initial speed of 105 m/s at an angle of 37º with the horizontal. (a) Determine the time taken by the projectile to hit the ground. (b) Determine the range of the projectile as measured from the base of the cliff. At the instant just before the projectile hits the ground, find (c) the horizontal and vertical components of its velocity, (d) the magnitude of the velocity, and (e) the angle made by the velocity vector with the horizontal.arrow_forwardCan you help me with this question? - A daredevil drove his motorcycle up an incline at 30 degree angle with the horizontal and got air borne at the end of the incline at 20 m/s, 11 m above the ground. How far horizontally did he land with his motorcycle on the ground, on a safety net?arrow_forwardConsider a projectile launched form ground level at an angle of elevation with an initial velocity . The maximum horizontal range is given by xmax=(v 2/0 sin2θ)/g, where g is the acceleration due to gravity. Here is the problem: If a soccer ball is kicked from ground level with an initial velocity of 28 m/sec, what is the smallest positive angle at which the player should kick the ball to reach a teammate 48m down the field? He can legally pass the ball to a teammate as long as the ball’s velocity relative to the field does not have a positive x component. If has magnitude 6.0 m/s, what is the smallest angle it can have for the pass to be legal?arrow_forward
