Chapter 4, Problem 4.5.40P
The plane frame shown in the figure is part of an elevated freeway system. Supports at A and D arc fixed, but there are moment releases at the base of both columns (AB and DE) as well as in column BC and at the end of beam BE.
Find all support reactions; then plot axial-force (N), shear (F), and moment (M) diagrams for all beam and column members. Label all critical N, V, and M values and also the distance to points where any critical ordinatcs are zero.

Beam ABCD represents a reinforced-concrete foundation beam that supports a uniform load of intensity q1= 3500 lb/ft (see figure). Assume that the soil pressure on the underside of the beam is uniformly distributed with intensity q2 Find the shear force VBand bending moment MBat point B. Beam ABC is fixed at support A and rests (at point B) upon the midpoint of beam DE (see part a of the figure). Thus, beam, ABC may be represented as a propped cantilever beam with an overhang BC and a linearly elastic support of stiffness k at point B (see part b of the figure). The distance from A to B is L = 10 ft, the distance from B to C is L/2 = 5 ft, and the length of beam DE is L = 10 ft. Both beams have the same flexural rigidity EI. A concentrated load P = 1700 lb acts at t lie free end of beam ABC. Determine the reactions RA, RB+ and MAfor beam ABC. Also, draw the shear-force and bending-moment diagrams for beam ABC, labeling all critical ordinates.

A beam ABCD with a vertical arm CE is supported as a simple beam al A and D (see figure part a). A cable passes over a small pulley that is attached to the arm at E. One end of the cable is attached to the beam at point B. (a) What is the force P in the cable if the bending moment in the beam just lo the left of point C is equal numerically to 640 lb-ft? Note: Disregard the widths of the beam and vertical arm and use centerline dimensions when making calculations. (b) Repeat part (a) if a roller support is added at C and a shear release is inserted just left of C (see figure part b).

A fixed-end beam AB of a length L is subjected to a uniform load of intensity q acting over the middle region of the beam (sec figure). Obtain a formula for the fixed-end moments MAand MBin terms of the load q, the length L, and the length h of the loaded part of the beam. Plot a graph of the fixed-end moment MAversus the length b of the loaded part of the beam. For convenience, plot the graph in the following nondimensional form: MAqL2/l2versusbL with the ratio b/L varying between its extreme values of 0 and 1. A simple beam of span length 3.2 m carries a uniform load of intensity 48 kN/m, The cross section of the beam is a hollow box with wood flanges and steel side plates, as shown in the figure. The wood flanges are 75 mm x 100 mm in cross section, and the steel plates are 300 mm deep. What is the required thickness t of the steel plates if the allowable stresses are 120 M Pa for the steel and 6,5 M Pa for the wood? (Assume that the moduli of elasticity for the steel and wood are 210 GPa and 10 GPa, respectively, and disregard the weight of the beam.)

A simple beam AB supports two concentrated loads P at the positions shown in the figure. A support C at the midpoint of the beam is positioned at distance d below the beam before the loads are applied. Assuming that d = 10 mm, L = 6m, E = 200 G Pa, and I = 198 x 106 mm4, calculate the magnitude of the loads P so that the beam just touches the support at C.

Two flat beams AB and CD, lying in horizontal planes, cross at right angles and jointly support a vertical load P at their midpoints (see figure). Before the load P is applied, the beams just touch each other. Both beams are made of the same material and have the same widths. Also, the ends of both beams are simply supported. The lengths of beams AB and CD are LABand LCD, respectively. What should be the ratio tABltCDof the thicknesses of the beams if all four reactions arc to be the same?
