Interpretation:

The types of elements that form ionic and molecular compounds are to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Molecular compounds contain only non-metals which are covalently bonded with each other. Any compound that has at least two different elements is considered to be a molecule.

While naming any molecular compound, the name of the first element is written at first, and then the name of the second element is written, followed by a suffix “ide”.

Ionic compounds contain atoms of metals and non-metals that are bonded together by an ionic bond formed via transfer of electrons between the atoms.

Explanation of Solution

The cation is an ion bearing positive charge on it. And the anion is an ion bearing negative charge on it. The ionic compounds contain a metal, which is a cation, and a non-metal, which is an anion.

Therefore, the cation and the anion in an ionic compound form an electrically neutral species. Naming of an ionic compound is done by naming the cation (metal), followed by naming the anion (non-metal) with a suffix “ide” added to it.

For example: In case of KBr, the cation is potassium, that has one positive charge on it and represented as K+1
