Concept explainers
In a type of parakeet known as a “budgie,” feather color is controlled by two genes. A yellow pigment is synthesized under the control of a dominant allele Y. Budgies that are homozygous for the recessive y allele do not synthesize yellow pigment. At an independently assorting gene, the dominant allele B directs synthesis of a blue pigment. Recessive homozygotes with the bb genotype do not produce blue pigment. Budgies that produce both yellow and blue pigments have green feathers; those that produce only yellow pigment or only blue pigment have yellow or blue feathers, respectively; and budgies that produce neither pigment are white (albino).

b. A cross is made between a pure-breeding green budgie and a pure-breeding albino budgie. What are the genotypes of the parent birds?

- In cattle, coat color is controlled by a sex-influenced gene that controls spot coloration. Mahogany and white spots are recessive in bulls, where as red-and-white spots is dominant in cows .A mahogany and white spotted cow is crossed with a red-and white spotted bull. The cow gives birth to a single calf with red-and-white spots. a. What are the genotypes of the cow, the bull, and the calf? Use H for dominant and h for recessive. Cow Bull Calf b. The red calf is eventually crossed with a heterozygous male. What is the probability that the first 3 calves will be mahogany with white spots? c. What is the probability that the cross in “b” will result in the first 3 calves being males with mahogany and white spots and the 4th calf a female with red and white spots?arrow_forwardIn humans, brown eyes are dominant to blue eyes, and the ability to roll your tongue is dominant to not being able to roll your tongue. If a mother who was heterozygous for eye colour and homozygous recessive for tongue rolling had a baby with a father that was heterozygous for both traits, what is the probability that their child would have blue eyes and could roll their tongue?arrow_forwardIn an example of recessive epistasis the deposition of pigment into hair follicles of the Labrador Retriever is governed by a dominant gene (C) and lack of deposition by its recessive allele (c). Lack of pigment deposition produces a yellow coat color. The color of pigment is governed by an independently assorting hypostatic gene, the dominant allele (B) produces black pigment and its recessive allele (b) produces brown. What coat color ratio is expected from the cross of a brown dog (bbCc) to a black dog (BbCc)? 3/8 black, 1/8 brown, 1/2 yellow 3/8 black, 3/8 brown, 1/4 yellow 1/2 brown, 1/2 black 1/2 black, 1/4 brown, 1/4 yellow 1/4 black, 1/4 brown, 1/2 yellowarrow_forward
- In genetics, the dash symbol (–) is a “wild card” that stands for either the dominant allele or the recessive allele; for example, A– means the individual has either the genotype AA or Aa. Two genes that undergo independent assortment affect coat color in Duroc pigs. Each gene has two alleles, one of which is dominant for coat color. Genotypes of the form A– B– are red, those of the form A– bb and aa B– are sandy, and genotype aa bb is white. What ratio of red:sandy:white is expected from the cross Aa Bb x Aa Bb?arrow_forwardIn birds there are two genes that both influence feather phenotype. The first is an autosomal gene for feather shape with two alleles – a dominant allele for curly feathers and a recessive allele for straight feathers. The second is a sex-linked gene for feather colour with two alleles – a dominant allele for grey feathers and a recessive allele for white feathers. A cross between a male with straight, white feathers and a female with curly, grey feathers are expected to produce the following offspring:1 curly grey male : 1 curly white female : 1 straight grey male : 1 straight white female Based on this cross, answer the following questions:i) Please provide appropriate symbols for the two alleles for feather shape. ii) Please provide appropriate symbols for the two alleles for feather colour. iii) What is the probability that a chick born to these parents will have grey feathers? iv) What is the probability of a male chick having grey feathers? v) What is the probability that this…arrow_forwardIn humans, hair color and structure are determined by two independent pairs of genes. The dominant gene T determines dark hair color, and the recessive allele t - light hair; The dominant gene S determines the formation of curly hair, and its recessive allele t - straight hair. What kind of hair will the children have if the mother has light, straight hair, and the father has dark, curly hair (one of the pairs of traits is heterozygous for both parents)?arrow_forward
- Suppose that in a species of mouse, the gene for brown coat color is dominant over the color black. Another gene (C) is responsible for depositing color on the hair. A single dominant allele (C) is sufficient for the color (black or brown) to be deposited on the hairs; those without a copy of the dominant allele are albino. A female mouse homozygous recessive for both characters is crossed with a male mouse heterozygous for both characters. A) Give the phenotypic ratio of the progeny of F1. (Punnet grid if possible) B) What proportion of the offspring of the F1 will have the same genotype as either of its parents?arrow_forwardSuppose two independently assorting genes are involved in the pathway that determines fruit color in squash. These genes interact with each other to produce the squash colors seen in the grocery store. At the first locus, the W allele codes for a dominant white phenotype, whereas the w allele codes for a colored squash. At the second locus, the allele Y codes for a dominant yellow phenotype, and the allele y codes for a recessive green phenotype. The phenotypes from the first locus will always mask the phenotype produced by the second locus if the dominant allele (W) is present at the first locus. This masking pattern is known as dominant epistasis. A dihybrid squash, Ww Yy, is selfed and produces 160160 offspring. How many offspring are expected to have the white, yellow, and green phenotypes?arrow_forwardGene S controls the sharpness of spines in a type of cactus. Cactuses with the dominant allele have sharp spines, whereas homozygous recessive cactuses have dull spines. At the same time, a second gene, N, determines whether or not cactuses have long or short spines. Homozygous recessive cactuses have short spines. A cross between a homozygous sharp-long cactus and a dull short-spined cactus would produce what percentage of sharp-long cacti?arrow_forward

A brown eyed man marries a blue-eyed (b) woman and they have three children two of whom are brown-eyed and one of whom is blue-eyed. if blue is recessive, what must the woman’s genotype be?arrow_forwardIn a poultry breed, chickens can have black, blue or white feathers. The different feather colors are determined by interactions between genes at two loci. One locus determines the type of pigment produced by the skin cells: a dominant allele B encodes black pigment, whereas a recessive allele b encodes blue pigment. Alleles at a second locus affect the deposition of the pigment onto the feathers. Allele E allows dark pigment (black or blue) to be deposited, whereas the homozygous recessive (ee) condition prevents the deposition of dark pigment, causing the feathers to be white. In each of the following 3 crosses give the genotypes and phenotypes of the parents and their offspring: a) Two black birds that are both heterozygous for traits B and E b) Two blue birds that produce 6 blue and 2 white chicks c) A black bird that is homozygous dominant for both traits and a white bird that is homozygous recessive for both traitsarrow_forward
