Concept introduction: The orbital formed by the addition of the overlapping of the atomic orbitals is known as the bonding molecular orbital. The orbital formed by the subtraction of the overlapping of the atomic orbitals is known as the bonding molecular orbital

To determine: The bonding and the antibonding molecular orbital.

Explanation of Solution

The molecular orbital of hydrogen are present in two categories, bonding and anti-bonding. The bonding molecular orbital lies on the right, whereas the anti-bonding molecular orbital is present on the left.

The bonding molecular orbital has a lower energy than the 1s orbital of the free hydrogen atom. The anti-bonding molecular orbital has a higher energy than the 1s orbital. Hence, the bonding molecular orbital shows a higher electron probability between the nuclei, whereas the anti-bonding molecular orbital shows a higher electron probability on the sides of the nuclei
