Solutions

Chapter 4, Problem 61RE
To determine

To find: Whether the canister will burst or not.

Expert Solution

Answer to Problem 61RE

The canister will not burst.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The height is 500 m and the velocity of impact is 100 .

Calculation:

The velocity is given as,

  v=a(t)dt=(9.8)dt=9.8t+C

The distance is given as,

  v=v(t)dt=(9.8t+C)dt=4.9t2+Ct+D

Substitute v(0)=0 in above equation.

  0=9.8(0)+CC=0

Substitute C=0 and t=0 in above equation.

  500=4.9(02)+0(0)+DD=500

Substitute the values in above equation.

  v(t)=9.8ts(t)=4.9t2+5000=4.9t2+500t=10.102

Substitute the value in above equation to get the velocity.

  v(t)=9.8(10.102)=99

Since, the velocity is less than 100.

Thus, the canister will not burst.
