To determine

(a)

The reaction at A and B for the T shaped bracket.

Answer to Problem 99RP

The reaction at A is 20j^ lb and reaction at B is 150j^ lb.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The value of a is 10 in

Concept used:

Write the expression for net force in x direction.

Fx=0

Write the expression for reaction at B in x direction.

RxB=0

Here, RxB is the reaction force applied at x direction.

Write the expression for moment about A.

MA=[(6i^×40j^)+(12i^×50j^)+((12+a)i^×30j^)+((20+a)i^×10j^)+(12i^×RBj^)] ....... (1)

Write the expression for moment about B.

MB=[(6i^×40j^)+((a)i^×30j^)+((8+a)i^×10j^)+(6i^×RAj^)] ....... (2)

Calculation:

The moment about A is zero due to bracket is in equilibrium condition.

Substitute 0 for MA in equation (1)

0=[(6i^×40j^)+(12i^×50j^)+((12+a)i^×30j^)+((20+a)i^×10j^)+(12i^×RBj^)]0=240k^600k^360ak^30ak^200k^10ak^12RBk^12RBk^=1400k^+40ak^

The expression for the resultant at B is,

RB=1400+40a12 ....... (3)

The moment about B is zero due to bracket is in equilibrium condition.

Substitute 0 for MB in equation (1)

0=[(6i^×40j^)+((a)i^×30j^)+((8+a)i^×10j^)+(6i^×RAj^)]0=240k^30ak^80k^10ak^+12RAk^12RAk^=40ak^160k^RA=40a16012

The expression for the resultant at A is,

RA=40a16012 ....... (4)

Substitute 10 for a in equation (3)

RB=1400+40(10)12=150 lb

Substitute 10 for a in equation (4)

RA=40(10)16012=20 lb

Conclusion:

Thus, the reaction at A is 20j^ lb and reaction at B is 150j^ lb.

To determine

(b)

The reaction at A and B for the T shaped bracket.

Answer to Problem 99RP

The reaction at A is 10j^ lb and reaction at B is 140j^ lb.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The value of a is 7 in

Calculation:

Substitute 7 for a in equation (3)

RB=1400+40(7)12=140 lb

Substitute 7 for a in equation (4)

RA=40(7)16012=10 lb

Conclusion:

Thus, the reaction at A is 10j^ lb and reaction at B is 140j^ lb.
