Textbook Problem

Where are the major warm and cool ocean currents located in respect to a continent’s coastal areas? Which currents have the greatest effect on North America?

To determine

The place where the major warm and cool ocean currents are located in respect to a continent’s coastal areas and the ocean currents having greatest effect on North America.

Explanation

Most of the ocean currents move in an expansive circulatory pattern, known as gyres, which flow around the subtropical highs. Oceanic gyres rotate in clockwise direction in Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in Southern Hemisphere because of the Coriolis Effect and the flow direction around the high-pressure cell.

Warm water currents move into higher latitudes as they flow through the regions of cooler waters. Therefore, this is known as warm currents and cooler waters moving equatorward are known as cold currents.

In Northern Hemisphere, Gulf Stream strongly deflects toward east direction due to the influence of Coriolis Effect, which occurs in higher latitudes...
