What was problematic about Mrs. Beck’s oral fluid replacement at home when she had vomiting and diarrhoea?

Case summary:

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Loss of water as well as electrolytes occurs in case of diarrhoea and vomiting. An elderly, sick person having or had diarrhoea and vomiting must drink minimum of 1.7 litres of water within 24 hours of time. Mrs. H had some water, which will be not sufficient to meet the water and electrolytes demand required by her body. Oral rehydration therapy as well as intravenous administration is effective in the treatment of dehydration caused by diarrhoea and vomiting.

Conclusion

Mrs. Beck’s oral fluid replacement was problematic because she did not drink enough water and it will not contain sufficient electrolytes required to replenish the loss.
