Chapter 42, Problem 3ITD
Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether there is any consistent relationship between the patterns of prolactin and growth hormone in plasma in the 24-hour period.

Introduction:

Lactation is the process of secretion of the milk from mammary glands. There are different hormones that influence this secretion, namely, the human placental lactogen, estrogen, prolactin, progesterone, oxytocin, follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin, growth hormone, and adrenocorticotropic hormone. The growth hormone also regulates cell regeneration and cell reproduction.

One of the main endocrine glands in the human body is the pituitary gland. This gland produces a variety of hormones with different effects. Among these are a heterogeneous group of hormones called tropic hormones, which directly stimulate the secretion of other hormones from downstream endocrine glands. Which of the following are tropic hormones? Select all that apply.      LH     Prolactin     Oxytocin     ACTH     TSH     testosterone
Which of the following statements about the half-life of hormones is correct? a) Hormones with a short half-life are present in relatively constant amounts in the blood b) Hormones with a short half-life regulate slow functions c) Fat-soluble hormones usually have a relatively long half-life d) Fat-soluble hormone is rapidly broken down by enzymes in the blood circulation e) Water-soluble hormones usually bind to plasma proteins (transport proteins)
Which of the following responses would NOT occur upon activation of MC2R (G protein coupled receptor that regulates the production of cortisol) ? a. Increased transcription of the genes for the enzymes to make cortisol b. Activation of enzymes required to make cortisol c. Increased transcription of the cortisol gene d. Decreased activity of miRNA that target the enzymes required to make cortisol
