What is the structure and function of a mitochondrion?

Summary Introduction

To review:

The structure and function of a mitochondrion.

Introduction:

The cells that have a true nucleus are called eukaryotic cells. A true nucleus means that the nucleus is surrounded by a nuclear envelope and is well-defined. There are many cell organelles present in the eukaryotic cells, some are single-layered and some have double layers (inner layer and outer layer).

Explanation

A mitochondrion is a bilayered membrane organelle. The inner and outer membranes have different properties and, because of that, the mitochondria are divided into five distinct parts, which are as follows:

The outer mitochondrial membrane: It is smooth and covers the entire mitochondria. It is present outside the mitochondria.

The intermembrane space: The space which is present between the inner and the outer membrane.

The inner mitochondrial membrane: It is not as smooth as the outer membrane, but has some infoldings that increase the surface area.

The cristae: They are the infoldings that are made by the inner membrane...
